Topic: General Subtitles

(link)

10:58am, Thursday 9 March 2006

I was watching the TV news while eating my breakfast this morning. To avoid disturbing everyone else who was still asleep, I had the subtitles on.

I don't know how the BBC produce subtitles for live programmes like the news. I image there's someone frantically typing away, maybe on some custom keyboard, possibly with word-prediction software... and occasionally they get it wrong. This morning, they got it wrong lots. My favourites were "a nursery of baby clubbers" (should have been poplars), "kerm ot Murnaghan" (should have been Dermot but I was hoping for kermit), and "Yoovered Police Officers" (should have been uniformed).
